The NGV Presents: 'Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto'

The moment we’ve all been waiting for. Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto will grace the National Gallery of Victoria this December with an exclusive focus on the significant contribution to twentieth-century fashion culture by Madame Chanel herself. 

Unfolding across multiple chronological and thematic sections, Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto navigates Chanel’s archetypal designs through a visual feast of more than 100 garments. Alongside the intricate display will be an exhibit of Chanel’s most innovative designs showcasing its perfumes, jewelry and accessories. 

Pieces included have been acquired from the infamous Palais Galleria and the Patrimoine de CHANEL à Paris, as well as imports and loans from various public museums and private collections across the globe. 

Also featuring in the exhibition are several designs from the NGV Collection, including recent and never before seen acquisitions.

“[Pieces] generously gifted by Krystyna Campbell-Petty AM and Family, include a white lace evening dress, spring-summer 1933 and spectacular shirred red silk velvet and marabou-lined evening cape, c.1924-26.” says the NGV spokesperson. 

Minister for Creative Industries, Danny Peason said: “Melbournians love their fashion so it’s fitting that Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto makes its first international debut right here in Melbourne after its premiere in Paris.”

Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto will be on display at the NGV International, Melbourne, from 5 December 2021 - 25 April 2022.
