Isabel Marant Defines Modern French Fashion for a New Generation

30 September 2024

Isabel Marant embodies the effortlessly cool, tomboyish Parisian style, remaining true to the brand’s 30-year vision while redefining modern French fashion for a new generation.

With the female gaze at its core, Isabel Marant's Spring Summer collection draws inspiration from the song “Go Wild in the Country” by Bow Wow Wow, channelling a free-spirited, independent woman with a 1980s punk edge and a tribalist twist.

Designing for the liberated women, Marant envisions her muse in flats, messy hair and a natural, makeup-free look. Embracing her frivolous nature, the French designer empowers her buyer with bohemian-inspired ensembles that create movement and draw attention: black and tan suede vests with fringes at the front, full fringe suede ponchos paired with fringed mini skirts, and textured fringes made from coloured fibres that create a feather-like effect on coats, mini skirts and crop tops.

As for accessories, models strut down the runway in an array of mini shorts, skirts and dresses in tan, black, and raspberry red, and materials of leather, suede, and canvas that were either studded, laced, or plain. Marant and artistic director Kim Bekker work together to dress the Marant girl; while Bekker focuses on adding jewellery and bags, Marant emphasises the shoes. This collaboration is present throughout the 51 looks, with models adorned in chunky gold and silver bangles, metal, wood, and ceramic square beaded bracelets and necklaces, bolo tie-inspired belts, and stylish moccasin booties or gladiator sandals.

Inspired by her love of vintage, Marant and Bekker purposely age her garments to remove the fear of wear and tear, making them more wearable in the process. This technique appears in weathered long-sleeve mini-tunic dresses baring Moroccan motifs, an oversized sun-bleached red canvas aviator jacket, Persian rug print pieces frayed at the hem and aged suede button-ups. Just like vintage clothing, Marant designs her pieces to blend into an existing wardrobe, making them easy to wear and style.

Grit. The word was chosen because it has multiple meanings: the fine, stony texture of earth or sand; the firmness of character; the clamping of objects together; a person’s courage and tenacity. It’s also an idea that is integral to the making of a magazine, for it takes a lot of perseverance and passion to create these 176 pages. It takes a lot of work.
