The Sandy Liang x Salomon capsule collaboration

In between New York and the French Alps, in a place where femininity encountered sportiness, designer Sandy Liang met outdoor heritage brand Salomon over a beautiful footwear capsule. The two brands were initially introduced during  New York’s fashion week, as Sandy Liang styled Salomons on her Spring/Summer 2021 collection runway. After a collaboration with skateboarding brand Vans in winter 2022, the avant-garde womenswear brand launched this spring two pairs of Salomon resulting from a splendid mix of unique styles. 

There is a sportiness to Salomon that resonates with me, explained Liang who draws inspiration from her childhood in the 90s spent in the Queens (New York). She studied fashion design at Parsons before starting her eponym label in the Lower East Side in 2013. One of her most iconic pieces is the Mary Jane Pointe Shoe, a combination of the classic Chinatown babies with the pointe toe of ballet slippers. With each piece she creates, Sandy Liang redefines the uniform of the downtown princess, and this Salomon capsule is no exception.

Growing up in the 90s, I loved wearing sneakers. I incorporated this into my design process, tapping into nostalgic colour-ways and details like the anime-inspired flower decal seen throughout the capsule, » said the New York designer. The classic XT-6 Expanse got updated in baby pink and bright green while the RX Moc 3.0 got added a 90s anime flower print. The models were reinvigorated with a sporty edge, the first one incorporating Salomon’s signature stitched paneling and retro SensifitTM construction —a moulding that wraps around the foot for a stable, precise and lightweight fit—. And the second one a sheer mesh upper to diversify the wearability and enhance breathability.

Shot by fashion photographer Steven Yatsko, the campaign depicts with tenderness, modern girls hanging out in central park’s lawn or maybe spending an afternoon in the Alps. Pastel and sheer dresses are styled with the muddy trainers resulting in a lovely mix of romantic wilderness and girly outdoor aesthetic.
