The Unfettered, Sex and Drug-fuelled Youth of New York City by Alain Levitt

photography ALAIN LEVITT
18 October 2023
Alain Levitt’s photographs of New York City’s youth are raw and nostalgic. Growing up in the 90s, the photographer was lucky enough to be a part of a ‘golden era’ in New York that saw flourishing artists, actresses, and film directors bud into their own sort of stardom. Levitt captured many familiar faces we now iconise, including Chloë Sevigny, Harold Hunter, Mischa Barton, Paris Hilton, Dash Snow, Leo Fitzpatrick, Courtney Love, and the list truly goes on. Here are a few unfettered moments from New York City’s sex and drug-fuelled youth.

Grit. The word was chosen because it has multiple meanings: the fine, stony texture of earth or sand; the firmness of character; the clamping of objects together; a person’s courage and tenacity. It’s also an idea that is integral to the making of a magazine, for it takes a lot of perseverance and passion to create these 176 pages. It takes a lot of work.
