PRGRSS X Birkenstock 1774
Birkenstock has enjoyed something of a quiet revolution these past few years. For a brand that will turn 250 in 2024, it’s not just enduring—it’s thriving. Still reliant on German manufacturing and sourcing of original materials, Birkenstock has come to signify integrity and understatement within the fashion ecosystem.
That’s not to say the brand is averse to risk-taking or looking forward; in an era where provenance and supply chain transparency are important markers, Birkenstock is eager to prove that it, too, can represent best in class. Enter 1774—named so for its founding year—the jewel in the Birkenstock crown.
The silhouettes remain largely unchanged from the mainline, but 1774 is the territory in which designers such as Rick Owens, Jil Sander and Proenza Schouler have left their indelible mark. Now, for just the third time, 1774 has released an in-house collection.
The collection itself is limited to just four seasonal colours: black, bone, pink and, in honour of the brand’s original insoles, baby blue. Its distinctions to the mainline remain subtle but unique, as the signature moulded footbed is lined in exquisite European-sourced leather. Joining the Sylt, Tokio and Arizona silhouettes for the first time are the Florida and Mayari—no doubt familiar to brand disciples—offering novel shapes for those whose knowledge has previously been limited to the classic Arizona and Boston.
1774 is the place where Birkenstock allows fresh ideas to meet enduring icons, balancing aesthetics and functionality. The collection is available at select global retailers including PRGRSS Store.
