Old Skool Made New

27 February 2025

Old Skool Vans are a cultural icon. With the release of the Premium Old Skool Music Collection, it’s clear these shoes have made their mark, representing not just street style but also music and skate culture. Their classic design and timeless shape continue to resonate with new generations, including the next wave of innovators.

Originally launched in 1977, the Style 36, better known as the Old Skool™, was Vans' second-ever skate shoe and the first to feature the signature Sidestripe™, a defining mark of the brand. Designed by skaters, for skaters, the Old Skool quickly made its mark outside  the skate world, becoming a staple  in underground music scenes. Vans recognises this  with their Premium Old Skool Music Collection, which features three unique capsules inspired by the Old Skool.

The first drop of this capsule collection includes leopard prints and vibrant solids, inspired by the original colour-ways that early punk and hardcore musicians rocked in the 1970s and 1980s. The second drop channels the Warped Tour aesthetic with classic checkerboard, two-tone designs, and flame prints, bringing back the essence of early 2000s dressing. The final drop features bold colours on gum soles, nodding to the underground hip-hop culture that repositioned the Old Skool style.

Even though the Vans Premium Old Skool Build is retro in style, it’s all about moving forward with smarter materials and updated construction. The brand has  upgraded the classic design with better cushioning, a more comfortable fit, and a few vintage-inspired details. The updated silhouette now feature a 30% biobased Sola Foam ADC insole for all-day comfort, glossy sidewalls, higher foxing tape, and throwback binding—elements that nod to the iconic Vans of the 1990s.

For this collection, Vans have teamed up with musicians who pour high-energy emotion and passion into their music, such as The Paranoyds, Voice of Baceprot, Little Simz, and Hi-Tech.

The Premium Old Skool Music Collection will drop monthly beginning February 7 at Vans retail locations, Vans.com.au and partners.

‘Multi-hyphenate’ and ‘multi-disciplinary’ are labels for individuals who embody numerous roles. Yet, the idea of excelling in various fields contradicts what we’re taught growing up: choose one profession, follow one path, be one thing. In fashion—and the creative world at large—that simply isn’t possible. Writers are artists, musicians are graphic designers, directors are actors. Why is this the case? Partly because our industries are under-resourced and largely under-funded, requiring people to take on multiple roles. But more fundamentally, creative people can indeed do many things. And, more importantly, they want to. This issue of to Be explores this very impulse to adapt and redefine our positions, our inclination to shapeshift into the many roles we play.
