Junya Watanabe Invites Us to Reflect on the Days Gone By

If Rick Owens’ ‘White Satin Army’ taught us to revolt against the tides of political extremism and usher in a new era of unity and peace, Junya Watanabe invites us to reflect on the days gone by—the movements lost to the sands of time and the sounds we may have forgotten.
From the outset, the formal silhouettes and distinct choice of fabrics showcased this season remind us of Watanabe’s earlier collections. However, this time, Watanabe takes ownership of his patchwork ability, presenting jackets, pants, and waistcoats spliced together in a unique manner. With the addition of Watanabe's distinctive patchwork, the iconic Levi's Type Three silhouette becomes an elegant frock coat.
Pairing his crafted garments with band tees and alternative hairstyles reminiscent of English punk movements evokes a strong sense of individuality and rebellion. This juxtaposition of high-quality tailoring with casual, edgy silhouettes is a hallmark of Watanabe’s work, as seen in his notable earlier collection for Spring/Summer 2006 titled “The Mad Capsule Markets.”
Junya Watanabe's collection is not only a celebration of bygone eras but also a call to acknowledge the lasting impact of subcultures on the modern fashion landscape.
